GEMINA: The ILLUMINAE Files_02 is the second installment in The ILLUMINAE Files.

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair is struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.[1]

The book starts with a series of court trials, and Leanne Frobisher is pleading innocent and denying the "alleged" invasion of Kerenza IV. They discuss the Illuminae Files, and the story starts.

Operative Rapier had warned Frobisher of the survivor ship Hypatia's coming, and Frobisher sends an elite BeiTech crew to take over the Heimdall station. Just before the crew, lead by Travis Falk, takes over the station, Nik Malikov is giving Hanna Donnelly 10 grams of "dust" (a drug, also referred to as tetraphenetrithylamine) that she ordered for the Terra Day party. He also gives her a palmpad for private communication and a jasmine flower, and they go their separate ways.

While Hanna is trying to flee from a BeiTech squad, Ella Malikova locks the soldiers in a bay and flushes them out of the airlock. Hanna is blamed after she's seen on camera right outside the airlock, and is under constant pursuit as a result for a good majority of the book.

To make things worse, the lanima that the House of Knives are raising on the Jump Station to harvest dust escape their secret room after being left without supervision, and they start hunting any person they come across.

Hanna, Nik, Ella and Isaac Grant set up various traps and attacks for their attackers, and avoid the lanima. However, a number of coincidences adds up to destabilize the wormhole that the Jump Station revolves around, opening communication from the Hypatia to two different parallel universe versions of Heimdall on the other side: one where Hanna is alive and Nik is dead, and one where Nik is alive and Hanna is dead. They realize that the Nik's in each universe have accidentally been swapped due to Nik flying close to the wormhole when it was broken, and they return dead-Nik to the proper alternate universe (where Hanna is also dead) just as alive-Nik returns to the original universe (where Hanna is alive). After all that, they still need to eliminate the rest of the surviving BeiTech team in an effort to recapture the station and get the wormhole online in time for the Hypatia's arrival.
